Laser Surface Photochemistry: Memories from a Friend
Symposium in memoriam of Savvas Georgiou
28 September 2015, 14:00‐18:00
FORTH, Seminar Room 1
The symposium is dedicated to the memory of Savvas Georgiou, former Research Director at IESL‐FORTH, a good friend
and an excellent colleague. This half day special event will highlight Savvas’ scientific contributions and present
memories from his everyday interaction with students and colleagues. The scientific session will feature lectures from
international experts on recent advances of laser surface photochemistry and related fields. This will be followed by a
session portraying Savvas as a researcher, teacher and friend, with stories and anecdotes drawn through the memories
of fellow researchers and students. The symposium will conclude with the inauguration of a new laboratory on
advanced materials laser nano‐processing within the premises of IESL‐FORTH, named after Savvas Georgiou.

Recent developments in quantum information need coherent manipulation
of quantum states. Among solid-state systems, semiconductor quantum
dots are promising candidates for realizing qubits. Important
advantages are the three dimensional confinement leading to a discrete
energy spectrum and the possible integration of dots in specific
devices. In this presentation, I will show how with resonant optical
pulses we can prepare and manipulate the states, and obtain single
indistinguishable photons. I will also address the problem of
interactions with the solid environment (phonons, fluctuating charges)
of the quantum dots that may cause severe limitations in the quantum
coherence.

InnovCrete Workshops: 29-30 October 2015
Innovation Management & Awareness
Innovation Capacity Building
The two workshops focus on one hand on identifying and securing IPR, IPR management, technology transfer and commercialization of research results, and on the other hand on building awareness about innovation and its impact in research organizations and SME’s, while providing an overview of Innovation Strategy (Why, Where and When to Innovate?) and Innovation Capacity (How to Innovate? With What People and Resources?).
The workshops are organized in the framework of the EU/REGPOT project InnovCrete coordinated by Prof. M. Kokkinidis (IMBB/FORTH & UoC/Dept. of Biology).
Please submit your registration using the attached forms by October 27th, 2015.
The workshops will take place 29-30 October 2015 (final agenda is attached) at the Science and Technology Park of Crete (STEP-C), Building B, Meeting Room 211, 1st floor.
Because the number of the participants to the workshops is limited to 30, it is highly recommended that you send back the completed form a.s.a.p.
