Description: | SPEAKER: Prof. Gianluca Valentini Department of Physics, Politecnico di Milano TITLE: "Laser spectroscopy and imaging: novel applications of fluorescence for the study of works of art and biological samples" DATE: Friday 9th March 2012 TIME: 12:00 ROOM: Chemistry Seminar Room ABSTRACT: Lasers present distinct advantages for the non-invasive analysis of complex systems. In this talk two different and novel applications will be presented: the analysis of cultural heritage and the imaging of biological samples. Various instrumentation developed at the Politecncio di Milano will be discussed, and different spectroscopic and imaging analyses will be highlighted. Applications of time-resolved fluorescence spectrοscopy will focus on the analysis of polymer degradation in design objects, and the presence of semiconductors in paintings by Vincent Van Gogh. For the study of biological materials, novel approaches based on Optical Projection Tomography for the 3-d imaging of small animals will be shown. |
