| Description: | Ioannis Liabotis Project Manager - Computing Infrastructure Greek Research and Technology Network (GRNET) "The European **High Performance Computing (HPC) landscape - opportunities for Greek researchers" Wednesday, 28 November 2012 @ 13:00 HCMR Seminar Room Host: A.Oulas Abstract: Modelling and simulation of physical objects or procedures is of fundamental importance for modern scientific and technological research and development. It complements theory and experimentation when the research subject is difficult to be directly observed (i.e. too small, too big, too fast, too slow or too complex). It allows us to try new scientific theories as well as to investigate the behaviour of the universe and to provide answers to important problems ranging from social sciences to climate change. Modelling and simulation requires access to large High Performance Computing systems, specialised software as well as support from qualified human resources. Since the value of High Performance Computing comes when used by real scientific applications, Europe makes significant efforts to support scientific communities by making HPC systems, software and human resources available for computational research. The seminar focuses on an overview of the availability of HPC infrastructures and services in Europe, the corresponding infrastructure and services in South Eastern Europe and in Greece, as well as the relevant activities within GRNET. It aims at informing the Greek scientific community for the status and opportunities in the field. About: Ioannis Liabotis is a project manager at the Greek Research and Technology network (GRNET- http://www.grnet.gr). He has been involved in a series of projects related to HPC and Grid computing. He is currently involved in PRACE and its implementation projects; he is also the technical coordinator of the HP-SEE project. His background is in distributed systems and software engineering. |
